How to Stay Warm This Winter

The recent temperature drop is a sign that winter is just around the corner. Below are some ways to stay warm and avoid a chill without cranking up your furnace!

  • Dress in Layers – bundle up with long underwear, sweaters, and even hats indoors if needed. It is better to have a “wicking” (polyester or silk) shirt on first vs. cotton one to keep sweat from staying on your skin and making you cold.

  • Keep Your Feet Warm – wear wool socks, house slippers, etc. If you can keep something separating your feet from the floor you’ll stay warmer throughout the day and night.

  • Stay Active – go for a walk, do some chores or practice some dance moves. Exercise will increase blood flow throughout your body, can boost your immune system and help keep you warm. Added benefits include mood-boosting endorphins and healthy weight maintenance!

  • Eat Warm, Drink Warm – Food is a vital source of energy for the body. Soups and stews are easy to digest and can warm your body from the inside out. Consider using more herbs and spices such as ginger and cinnamon for their warming benefits as well. You can also brew a hot tea or hot water with lemon to keep you warm between meals.

  • Snuggle Up – when you’re not moving and shaking, grab a blanket, a hot water bottle, a person or a pet to snuggle up to and share heat.

  • Go Nuts! – nuts have healthy fats in them which play a role in the body’s temperature regulation. Enjoying a handful of mixed, unsalted nuts can help you out when you have a chill.
