Setting SMART New Years Resolutions

With the new year approaching, many people vow to make the next year an improvement on the last. Although we have good intentions to be more organized, lose weight, recommit to health and fitness, etc, many of us do not set resolutions that allow us to be successful.

In order to be more successful with your resolutions this year, it is important to begin with solid and SMART goal-setting. SMART is an acronym that stands for Specific, Measureable, Attainable, Relevant, and Time-bound.

When creating your resolutions this year, you should ask yourself the following questions to help make your goals sustainable and successful.

  • Is your resolution Specific? What exactly do you want to accomplish, who will be involved, where will the goal be accomplished and most importantly, why do you want to achieve this goal?

  • Is your resolution Measurable? How will you know that you have completed your goal? How many steps will it take to achieve this?

  • Is your resolution Attainable? Do you have the resources you need in order to make your resolution successful? Is the goal too difficult for you to accomplish in the time period you have allotted? Will the steps you have planned allow you to reach your goal?

  • Is your resolution Relevant? Are you able to commit to the goal? Will working towards this goal limit your ability to reach other goals?

  • Is your resolution Time-bound? When do you want to accomplish this goal by? When do you plan on starting to work towards your goal?

Building goals in this fashion allow you to determine if the resolution is a good fit for where you are or if you need to adjust it in order to ensure you can follow them. It is important to remember that even if you set SMART goals, it is always a good idea to re-evaluate them throughout the year in order to give yourself the best chance for successful resolutions this year!
