Did you know that 60% of what you put on your skin is absorbed into your body?

Many of the products that we apply and spray on ourselves everyday contain various ingredients that do more harm than good for our overall health when used long-term. Various ingredients including Phthalates and Polyethylene glycol (PEG) can increase your risk of skin allergies, infertility, hormone disruptions, etc.

Below are some tips on how to choose safe, non-toxic products as part of your skincare and health routine.

  • Keep it Simple: don’t get caught up in all the cosmetic marketing. All your skin really needs is a pure, basic cleanser and moisturizer as well as a natural sunscreen to stay healthy and vibrant.

  • Know the lingo: Just because a product says it is “natural” or “all-natural” doesn’t mean it really is. Take a look at the Environmental Working Groups Cosmetic Database to get the real low-down on how your products compare to others in terms of quality and natural ingredients. http://www.ewg.org/skindeep/

  • Avoid scents: Although they may smell nice, fragrances are often packed with a variety of chemicals that can lead to allergic reactions and health concerns over time. Opting for fragrance free products can help you avoid these added toxins.

  • Turn your attention inside: The skin is a reflection of what is going on inside your body. Changes to skin can indicate imbalances in hormones, digestion, etc. Eating healthy proteins and fats as well as regular exercise and staying hydrated can help to support your skin and flush out toxins from your body so you can obtain fresh, glowing skin.

  • Do-It-Yourself: The best way to know exactly what is in your skincare products is to make it yourself (Hint: it’s actually not that difficult!).

Dr. Kristin Wootton, ND is the co-creator of Creative Naturals, a company that runs DIY all natural skincare product workshops in Burlington Ontario. Although what you put on your skin is an impartant part to improving its health, digestion and hormones play an integral role in your skin as well!
