Increase Exercise Motivation in 5 Easy Steps

We all know that exercise is an important part of a healthy lifestyle. Regular activity can help to boost your energy, improve your mood, control your weight, improve your sleep quality, and prevent many health concerns. With that being said, it can be extremely difficult to stay motivated all year round. Below are some tips that can help to encourage you to either start or continue with your activity regimen.

  • Do something you enjoy! Exercise doesn’t have to mean going to the gym or going for long runs – hiking, yoga swimming and dancing are other options. By finding a type of activity that you enjoy, you will be more motivated to stick with your routine. It can also be helpful to mix up the type of activity you do throughout the week so you don’t get bored doing the same thing all the time.

  • Schedule your workout! Slot regular workout times in your calendar/planner and view them as non-negotiable meetings. If it’s in your calendar, you’ll have to think twice before making plans at the same time.

  • Get organized! If you plan to workout before work, lay out your clothes, shoes and equipment the night before in a place you will see them right when you wake up. If you’re working out later in the day, pack your bag the night before to take with you.

  • Grab a buddy! Team up with a friend who has similar activity goals as you do. This will help to keep both of you accountable and on-track.

  • Set small, realistic goals! Have a reward system for yourself in which you treat yourself to a small item you love when you reach certain goals (ex: two weeks of sticking to your exercise schedule). Set your various reward times up front so you always know you have something to look forward to.
